Speeds

Posted Speed: The posted or statutory speed limit for the motor vehicle at the time of the crash.

Advisory Speed: Advisory speed limit only applies to areas with a posted advisory speed, such as curves, exits, etc. If no advisory speed is posted in the area this field should be left blank. Advisory speed is not an estimated safe travel speed due to current road or weather conditions. Advisory speed should be less than the posted speed limit.

Travel Speed: Travel speed is the speed the vehicle was traveling immediately prior to the occurrence of the crash. Travel speed may be an estimate by the investigating officer, a witness, a driver, or an occupant of the vehicle. Travel speed should be zero for any vehicle that is stopped or parked.

Impact Speed: Impact speed is the speed of the vehicle at the time of first impact. This speed may be the same as or less than the travel speed. Impact speed cannot be greater than the travel speed. Impact speed should be zero for any vehicle that was stopped or parked.
