DPS, DABS, & WCF Insurance Urge Utahns To Add a Sober Ride to Their Holiday Celebration Plans
Extra DUI Enforcement Is Happening Now Through New Year’s Day
The Utah Department of Public Safety, Department of Alcoholic Beverage Services, and WCF Insurance are asking Utahns to “Make it home for the holidays — plan a sober ride.” This campaign highlights various safe ways to get home if you are impaired, while also informing the public that extra DUI enforcement will be happening statewide throughout the holiday season.
We are notifying the public in advance about this increased enforcement, hoping to prevent people from choosing to drive after consuming alcohol or taking impairing drugs. DPS and partners introduced a $10 Lyft ride credit funded by WCF Insurance. The credit is available to anyone statewide throughout December and can be accessed via QR codes displayed in DABS liquor stores and participating bars.

Impaired Driving Facts:
- Alcohol-related crashes in Utah are 15 times more likely to be fatal than all other types of crashes
- The average BAC for alcohol-related DUI arrests in Utah is 0.14 (nearly three times the legal limit)
- Alcohol-related fatalities accounted for 18% of all traffic fatalities from 2020 to 2024
- In 2025 (SFY), there were 10,923 DUI arrests in Utah; that’s an average of 30 arrests per day
- Drug-related fatalities accounted for 42% of all traffic fatalities from 2020 to 2024.
For a safe holiday season, being a responsible driver is simple:
- Have a plan that includes arranging a safe ride home before your holiday celebrations
- If someone you know is impaired, take their keys and don’t let that person get behind the wheel
- If you drink, don’t drive – Utah’s BAC limit is 0.05; impairment starts with the first drink or drug.
- Utah’s ride-share and taxi companies are a great option to keep an impaired friend and others safe
- Always wear a seatbelt; it’s your best defense against impaired drivers
Enforcement Efforts
Law enforcement officers will participate in a national high-visibility DUI enforcement mobilization called “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.” The Utah Highway Patrol and 40 local police agencies are participating in over 300 extra DUI enforcement shifts statewide from December 10 through January 1, 2026.
A DUI can quickly turn your celebrations into a moment of distress and regret. Law enforcement has zero tolerance for those driving under any type of impairment. If you plan to drink during your holiday celebrations, plan a sober ride.
Law enforcement will be working additional DUI shifts, actively patrolling for impaired drivers throughout the winter holiday season.
This high-visibility enforcement and media campaign is in addition to enforcement already happening on the roads. We’re notifying the public in advance about the increased DUI enforcement statewide, hoping to prevent people from choosing to drive after consuming alcohol or taking impairing drugs.
